Patti Austin Joins Tena Clark in MUSE/IQUE Uncorked Series, March 11 – Pasadena, CA
Patti Austin will be performing in MUSE/IQUE Uncorked Series, “Powerhouse from the Firehouse: The Legendary Tena Clark Backstage,” on Monday – March 11, at 7 pm, in an intimate setting on the Pasadena Civic Auditorium stage.
MUSE/IQUE is an innovative cross-genre music organization curated by noted artistic director/conductor Rachael Worby. It’s mission is to embrace the unexpected. In keeping that mission, MUSE/IQUE seats guests at cocktail tables and on risers and bleachers for a close-up musical conversation with Tena Clark, a Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer, who takes the audience inside the process of building a song from scratch, highlighted by performances by some of the artists who have been a part of her storied career.
Tena Clark’s Mentors
Like Patti, Tena has amazing mentoring stories to share. Tena found her first mentor when she was a teen and became pen pals with legendary drummer Hal Blaine. Hal Blaine taught her what to study and what to listen to. They stayed friends for many, many years. “He was a great mentor to me.” – Hal
Tena went on the road after graduating from USM and bumped into Stevie Wonder in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Stevie Wonder was recording Secret Life of Plants there and Tena was there working as a 2nd Engineer. Stevie became Tena’s mentor and brought her to Los Angeles. “It just changed my life. I was at his studio with him every morning, at like, 3:00 a.m. But what it had taught me, being with him, is that I really needed to focus on my writing and producing — I didn’t even know what producing was then…” says Tena Clark in an interview.
Other guests: Mary Wilson, Sara Niemietz and Shelea Frazier.
